In Plato’s Cave, from the book: On Photography by Susan Sontag, she explained how photographs compare with Plato's Cave, where prisoners faced a blank wall which they had been doing their whole lives. So they had believed that the shadows that they would see on the walls were “real.” However, when they got free, they then realized that the shadows were not “real” but instead it was a representation of light reflecting onto the walls of the cave. In that case, the reality that the people had in the cave was limited to what was only in the cave. Upon getting freed from the cave, the people learned new knowledge of the shadows. This is similar to how we see photos/art because we only see parts of the truth. Photographs don’t show the whole truth of reality, just a piece of it through the eyes of the photographer. When looking at images, we make our interpretations behind them and create a sense of reality through a single image. Each photographer can influence people through what they capture. Sonntag also compares photographs to hunting. Saying the camera is the “gun” emphasizes that whoever has the “gun” has more power over a poor defensive animal. For the lab part, I edited two pictures. One in size 5x7 inches and the other being 1920px by 1080px. For the 1920px by 1080px, I had taken a photo in one of the hallways with the windows. At first, the picture was very bright because of the light from the window, so I made the temperature more on colder side. I also made the blacks more pointed and lowered the whites. I also lowered the saturation so that it looks ery. For the second photo, I edited the 5x7 in the street from the windows in the hallway. I higher the saturation so that the colors would pop out more. So that it looks more vibrant and the colors stand out more.
